The Internet of Things is, fundamentally, an ecosystem of interconnected intelligent devices. This type of connections generate data that might have a commercial interest or be of useful for public entities. What does ‘Internet of Things (IoT) mean?

When we refer to the Internet of Things (IoT), we talk about an ecosystem of devices that are interconnected and able to exchange data through both wired and wireless networks. This type of devices include smartphones, computers, home appliances and any other device with similar characteristics.

These devices generate data constantly while used and because of the way they’re used. At the same time, this data is then shared across different servers located both on cloud servers and servers owned by companies, in order to be processed and help in decision-making processes or new product design processes.

Once an IoT ecosystem is set-up, new devices can be incorporated when needed

An IoT ecosystem can be established on a short scale, such as a local network in a particular company, or a bigger scale, such as closed communities, university campuses or cities. This makes connected devices become an omnipresent part of our lives.

The evolution of the Internet of Things have enabled a better understanding of different business processes. In order to work, an IoT ecosystem can be divided in three different layers:

  • Physical layer. Composed of devices, sensors and controllers. They make up the IoT environment. Any intelligent device that can be connected to a wired or wireless network can be part of the Internet of Things.
  • Informatics layer. This refers to the storage and processing of data generated by devices. This defines networks and communication protocols used for connectivity.
  • Application layer. This refers to the set of integrated services provided from the Internet of Things to the cloud to obtain relevant and useful information from the collected data.


Internet of Things evolution and history

The initial concepts regarding the creation of a network of intelligent devices were first discussed in 1982, when a modified Coca-Cola machine became the first home appliance connected to the Internet. During the 90s, several academic articles were published and the term the Internet of Things became popular in 1999.

From that moment on, the concept of Internet of Things and its evolution were related to the incorporation of sensors and connections in all types of devices which could host them. Basically, it was about incorporating “intelligence” in different types of electronic devices.

It was the year 2000 when LG announced plans for the development of a fridge which could be connected to the Internet. With the advent of a new millennium, the term “Internet of Things” and its evolution were closely linked to academic research.

Between 2008 and 2010 the quantity of devices connected to the Internet surpassed that of the human population. At this time, it was established that there were around 12.500 millions of intelligent devices including smartphones, tablets, computers and different electrodomestics. A figure which almost doubled the world’s population.

From 2010, the Internet of Things evolution has been exponential and growth is expected to continue in the coming years. As such, 5G was the latest step in technologies of connectivity for IoT, a wireless connection significantly quicker compared to its predecessors.


Relationship between IoT and Big Data: the importance of data analysis

As we’ve seen, the Internet of Things has experimented a big and quick development in the latest decade. This wouldn’t have been possible without the technological development of three different disciplines, which are all related to data analysis: Cloud Computing, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence.

As an example, one must consider the increased availability of economical storage thanks to Cloud Computing, which allows companies to store big volumes of data generated by IoT systems.
